Lid Art: Awesome Labels!

I’ve been playing around with art journaling for a while now and I splurged on a new toy today!  I bought some of the Jim Holtz Distress Inks and a snazzy new 7gypsies stamp from the clearance bin at Michael’s.

I kept watching videos on YouTube, especially those from Mike Deakin, as he puts together some quality work and is also going on the Journal 52 schedule, and found that a lot of the artists are making use of the distress inks.  I didn’t want to spend the money.  They are kind of expensive.  But then I had a 40% coupon, so really, who can resist?

Not this girl.

So, I bought them.  I brought them home and put them in my art area.  Then I got distracted.  I finished my Deli Dill’s.

Then…that’s when I figured out what I could use my new inks on!  Labels!

Lid Art: A Visual Guide

lid art materials

I first got my materials together.  See the sweet vintage recipe cards I found today at a yard sale?  Awesome.  Knew I needed them for a quarter!

ink that stamp!

I then inked my sweet new stamp with the Antique Linen from Distress Inks to make a neat background design for the labels.  Re-ink between each stamping.  I tried to be frugal with the ink.  It was not happening.

I used an old canning jar lid to make a circle on my card and inked up my lettering.

I then realized that I needed a smaller label, ugh, details!  I traced the smaller lid and added the date with an ultra fine point Sharpie in a golden-yellow. Voila!

double lid art

I realized that I had room to make another on the same sheet, so excited!

I didn’t think about that pencil line…blurg.  I decided to do a swell scalloped edge.  Like I meant it that way!

This project was a lot of fun and I am super excited to give my canned goods away to family and friends.
