Thursdays are tough for me at work and the first Thursday of each month means that in addition to the regular craziness, I also have to stay after for a late meeting. This past Thursday, however, marked the opening of the new Montour Falls Farmer’s Market and as a veteran of the farmer’s market scene, I must say I am impressed.
The new site is on Main Street in Montour Falls, NY in a little park created after the demolition of an old building. It is a beautiful addition to the town, and after talking with some of the people associated with the market, it seems that they have plans to improve it further.
Farmer’s Market Vendors
I perused the vendors, Lucky Dog Farm, Cauyta Sun Farm, Ort Family Farm, Finger Lakes Foie, Pine Meadow Angus, Village Bakery, Seneca Sunrise Coffee and, of course, the food trucks: Pi and Over the Moon Grilled Cheeserie.
As I had a meeting fast approaching, I decided that a grilled cheese was in order and I decided to go for the basic and have the ABC: a beautiful sharp cheddar on multi-grain bread. It was delicious and satisfying!
I don’t want to leave Pi out, they will certainly be making my tummy happy in the future with their delicious pizza.
Since I was headed to a meeting, I didn’t end up buying any of the meats available, but am very interested to try some of the choices and see the differences in taste and quality from store-bought. I expect I will be quite pleased. Cayuta Sun Farm caught my eye with some bacon. Mmmmmbacon.
Lucky Dog Farm had a sample tray of their Biker Bar in ‘Sunshine in My Basket’ flavor, which I tried, loved and bought all the remaining bars. Delicious, no added sugar and high in fiber, protein and nutrients. It is styled as an energy bar, consists of oats, water, dates, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries, cinnamon, vanilla, orange zest and sea salt and really does meet the expectations of its name. It is a beautiful thing.
I can’t wait for this week and am very excited to see how it grows!
A big shout out to Roxanne Leyes of the Montour Falls Library as the market manager for loving her community and putting the work in to make this a success!
